THE FIRST STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE WRITING THE NHBRC TEST

NHBRC HOME BUILDERS REGISTRATION

Any person or company in the business of building homes is required by law to be registered with the NHBRC. This is the first step before you write the NHBRC test.

This process ensures compliance with building standards and provides protection for housing consumers. 

On this page, we will give you guidance on the steps to follow to become a NHBRC registered home builder.

STEP 1 - Create an Online Profile

  • Visit the NHBRC Online Services Portal: eservices.nhbrc.org.za

  • Click on “Register a Profile” to create your account.

STEP 2 - Complete the Registration Form

  • Fill out the online registration form with accurate company and personal details.

STEP 3 - Submit Required Documentation

Prepare and upload the following documents:

  • Certified copy of your South African ID or passport.

  • Valid tax clearance certificate from SARS.

  • Company registration documents:

    • Notice of Incorporation (CoR 14.1) for PTY companies.

    • Certified copy of shareholding certificate (PTY only).

    • Trust Resolution / Deed of Trust (Trusts only).

    • Certified copy of Partnership agreement letter (Partnerships only).

4. Pay the Registration Fees

  • Initial application fee: R745.61 (non-refundable).

  • Annual membership fee: R526.32.

  • Builders Manual:

    • Home Builders Manual – R87.82.

    • Home Builders Manual & SANS 10400 – R3,168.15.

  • Payment details will be provided upon submission of your application.

5. Undergo Technical Assessment

  • After submitting your documents, you'll receive the Home Building Manual (2015).

  • You must pass the NHBRC technical assessment test within 30 days of paying the application fee.

  • Builders are allowed only two attempts to pass this NHBRC test.

6. Receive NHBRC Certificate

  • Upon successful completion of the NHBRC test and verification of your documents, you'll be issued an NHBRC registration certificate.
